On this one, we want to thank D’Maker, the portuguese distributor of the brands Faders, Edelweiss, Princetontec, Trek’n’Eat e Vipole.

D’Maker is with us for a year, it was already our equipment partner in the expedition Gasherbrum 2008, and is now again supporting us in Gasherdreams.

It’s currently safe to say that we’ll have chocolate mousse and vanilla rice pudding at 7000m hight, and we’ll spare our legs in the long 100 km trekking until base camp with a good pair of poles.

We’ll use new ropes helmets and carabineers. We’ll also not miss proper light…only if we miss the batteries…but since Princetontec is not making those, that item is entirely our responsibility!

So again, thank you D’Maker, and Carlos Vieira, for the support once again.

RAB & PodSacs

Aqui fica o nosso obrigado à Equipuk, à qual pertencem as marcas RAB e PodSacs e à Nikki, com quem contactei frequentemente.

Obrigado, pelo apoio e pela eficiência.

Thank you guys!

Some time ago, I peeked several times at RAB’s web page. I was looking for some down jackets and 2 of their models looked great for the climb we have planned.

There was also a small tent catching my attention, weighing 2,2kg! I imagined it would be the ideal weight to share between my back and Paulo’s.

Through RAB’s page I found out about Podsacs and I must confess I wasn’t aware of this brand! I investigated further and the backpacks available became very…attractive to us. Partly because of the designers obvious attention to detail, the high technical specification and of course…because of the weight, or…the lack of it!

The more I saw the materials and gear available, the more my interest grew. It was easy to understand why the gear was so well specified. It’s because it is designed by alpinists, for alpinists. By people that understand the athletes needs in every activity, because they practice it themselves.

One day I decided to contact RAB, and many emails were exchanged, advice offered and decisions made. So at last our package arrived! In addition to the much wanted down jackets (Neutrino Andes Jacket and Summit Batura Jacket), we also received Expedition Mitts, Vapour-rise Jackets, Podsacs and the new tent Summit Superlite Bivi, that instead of 2,2kg has 1,5kg!!!!

As a feed-back, it pleased me a lot to realise that their main concern was that we made reports about the gear, in a way that they can make it even better.

So we want to thank Equipuk, RAB and PodSacs for the support for Gasherdreams expedition, and Nikki, with whom we had frequent contact.

Thanks you guys, for your support, and efficiency!

Daniela at 6000 m, with GII on the back.

Gasherbrum II (8035m) is located in the Karakorum range, in the Islamic Republic f Pakistan.

The name of this mountain was given by the Balti people, and it is the second highest mountain in the group of the Gasherbrum’s (meaning “Shining wall”).

The first ascent was done by the Austrians Larch, Wilenpart and Moravec, in July 1956, after almost 3monthes of expedition.

They climbed by the southwest spur, that is now the normal route.

The second ascent was done by the internationally famous French alpinists, Marc Batard and Yannick Seigner, 19 years after the first climb of the mountain.

They chose to ascent through the south spur in 1975. Since then, their line of ascent is known as “The French Spur”.

Daniela, in the beginning of "The French spur".

In 2008, after acclimatizing in the normal route reaching 7000 m, we tried to climb “The French Spur” in alpine style. We began our ascent following the way that looked more obvious and safe, we climbed a face on the right-hand of a great rock tower, and then a very sharp crest that lead to another. We managed to camp (after spending 4 hours to dig a small platform) at 6500m.

Na "aresta afiada".

On the sharp crest

The climb was harder than what it looked like from below. Quite a lot of times, we had to belay in the ice, to be safer in some steps. Still, we were motivated to keep climbing, until receiving a message from Vitor Baía, informing us that bad weather was coming sooner then expected.

A "aresta afiada" vista de cima.

The sharp edge as seen from above.

On the second day, a horizontal and exposed traverse involving mixed climbing in rotten rock, with about 60m, took us 2 hours to go through.

We then realised that it would be impossible to reach the summit without being caught by the bad weather.

So, we aborted our attempt and downclimbed and rappelled directly to the glacier, right from the point where we were.

Momentos antes de desistir.

Moments before starting our descent.

Back home, after some investigation, we found out that there was no info. about any expedition starting to climb that line where we started. Without knowing, we had just opened an entry variant on “The French Spur”.

This year, we decided to try that line again.

Our plan is, once again, acclimatize on the normal route of GII and then go for “The French Spur” light style.

A curious aspect is the fact that, the line that we dream to climb is intimately related to Daniela’s birth.

On the late hours of the 17th of June of 1975, Marc Batard and Yannick Seigner were getting ready to start the climb that would lead them to the summit of GII (accomplished on the 18th of June), following the south spur, never climbed before.

At about the same time, taking in account the different timetables, Daniela was born, crying out loud for the first time.

Almost 34 year later, we are counting the days to go back there.

Why return to Gasherbrum II?

“In the summer of 2008 we decided to climb one of the giants of the earth in alpine style. In Gasherbrum II, a little higher than 8000m, we found what we were looking for, an aesthetic line that allowed a clean ascent, with no fixed ropes and no previous high altitude camps, at least we were going to try…sadly, we didn’t make it to the summit.

So this dream led reality, the reality of an adventure without an end. The reality led to a new dream…to try again…”

We spent almost one year dreaming, looking at numerous pictures of Gasherbrum II (8035m) and evaluating the possibility of returning. We also spent one year with our wallets almost empty! The confirmation of our new adventure came on the 3rd of April, co-incidentally the very same day that we had taken a risk and already paid for our flights to Islamabad!

From that moment on, daily life was once again driven by the expedition. The motivation in our workouts grew even more, we revised all our gear checking our needs, we optimised some items, imagined strategies, dreamed about what will be our reality in June and July.

A thousand questions drop in our minds…will we find less ice on the ascent line? Will the weather be more favourable? Will…? Will...?

The only answer we have for sure is that the ascent we choose to go for will not be an easy one, but it will surely be another unforgettable experience. We are certain that we want to try again to ascend the line that one year ago caught our attention, the “French Spur” in Gasherbrum II.

Our choice was not immediate. We thought about going for other mountains, searching for other possible adventures, in lost places in other mountain ranges of the world.

We asked ourselves countless times: with so many mountains still to discover for us, why are we going back exactly to the same place, to the same mountain? The answer is always the same, there, in GII, the “French Spur” is the line that we still dream to climb, and if our dream is there, why run away from it?

The “French Spur” was love at first sight, it enlightened our imagination since the first day we saw it.

This time we will attempt the same line using the same strategy, acclimatising on the normal route, and going for the “French Spur” all at once, light style, no oxygen, no porters and no fixed ropes.

We are well aware that stepping on the summit of GII this way will not be an easy task! Our attempt in 2008 showed us that the line is harder than it appears to be when we look at it from below.

But even though we are aware of the difficulties, we go filled with optimism, hoping that the line will be in better climbing conditions, that the mountain will give us the chance to climb it, that the wind will be little more than soft breeze and that the sun will shine for us in the crucial days.

We will leave to Islamabad on the 7th June.
